I did lose, but with 2 exceptions, my losses were still only mere seconds (or 1-2 meta-upgrades) away from turning into wins. Even when things went very poorly in multiple ways, I could always think of a possible way out. In general, until the very last few Prestige levels, the game is very forgiving.Even without all the meta-upgrades, the timer is fairly generous. Once I can sustain food, including at least 1 complex food, it's usually enough for everything else to start falling into place. On higher difficulties, I find that the main problem to solve is food. It's pretty rare for me to pass on reducing hostility when it is one of the options I am offered. Almost every negative seasonal condition can be solved by just building houses and keeping your hostility below 3 during all Storm seasons before the late game. Sources of hostility reduction are ridiculously strong. After that, runs diverge very wildly and decision-making is very enjoyable Year 1 is pretty formulaic, but still generally provides interesting enough decisions and can vary a lot starting around Clearance or Storm depending on the blueprints you find. The fusion works quite well, and the level of polish is already quite high. I appreciate the blend of roguelike elements with a city builder. I enjoyed playing it quite a lot, overall. I've organized some of the personal notes I made along the way in this post. Although I've barely watched anybody else play and never at a level above Viceroy, I've spent a few hours discussion strategy and balance with others online. I have around 14 Smoldering City upgrades left to buy, but I also edited my save to give myself enough artifacts to afford the additional cornerstone choice upgrade after defeating Prestige 13 without that upgrade in a frustrating run. I suffered six losses along the way: two at Prestige 9 in the cursed royal woodlands, two at Prestige 16, and one each at Prestige 18 and Prestige 20. After playing the tutorials, I started with Pioneer difficulty and increased the difficulty by one level after each win until finally winning on Prestige 20. I bought the game shortly after the steam release.
